Take a drive through Carlisle and you’ll quickly notice its natural beauty and landscaped dotted with historical homes and farms, rolling hills and wooded areas.
Referred to as “the city of woods” by Henry David Thoreau, Carlisle, MA became incorporated as a town in 1805. This small and affluent community is unique in that it’s within 40 minutes of Boston, but boasts a quiet environment with virtually no commercial activity or buildings. Carlisle has just under 5,000 residents and features no office buildings, apartment complexes or even shopping plazas. Approximately 25% of the town is protected conservation land.
Carlisle is so quaint in fact that the two biggest gatherings spots are the town are the Transfer Station (the town has no trash or recycling removal service) and Ferns Country Store, a popular spot to grab a sandwich and catch up with “the neighbors.”
For outdoor enjoyment, Carlisle is home to Great Brook Farm State Park and a portion of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge neighboring the Concord River.
The public school system in Carlisle is highly regarded. In September 2010, Boston Magazine named Concord Carlisle High School the 5th best public high school in Massachusetts.
News travels via the town newspaper - the “Carlisle Mosquito.” It has been the weekly, non-profit, independent newspaper of the town since 1972. The paper includes local news and community announcements.
