The town of Bedford has developed its own unique identity as a picturesque historical town with a family-oriented feel.
Take a drive down The Great Road, and you’ll see why this small town is so appealing! Carved out of Billerica and Concord in 1729 the town has a cherished past. It boasts the oldest complete American flag in the United States, on display at the Bedford Public Library. Each April the Bedford Minuteman Company participates in re-enactments of the early battles of the Revolutionary War. And each September, the town celebrates the very popular Bedford Day, a festival complete with a parade, live entertainment and street fair.

Bedford’s public school system is second to none in its commitment to excellence. Academic performance at Bedford schools consistently ranks well above the state averages. Facilities are either new or recently renovated and feature state-of-the-art amenities. Bedford was named as one of 2010’s "100 Best Communities for Young People” by America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth, which was founded and is mentored by General Colin Powell.
The town also offers wonderful resources and activities for families with children up to 5 years old through the volunteer-run organization The Bedford Family Connection.
Near the town’s center is Mudge Way, a popular and bustling spot that houses the town hall, Bedford Library, recreation department, high school and police station. In the fall, spring and summer, you’ll find the fields teaming with activities, whether it’s a youth soccer game, an afternoon with friends at the playground, or a toddler story time on the library lawn.
Bedford’s popular Recreation Department sponsors a wide array of programs and activities for all ages, many of them held in the renovated historic Town Hall building beside the Bedford Common.
Bedford was also the first town in the area to pass the Community Preservation Act (CPA), which guarantees matching state funds earmarked for historic preservation, open spaces, and affordable housing. There is a public boat launch on the local Concord River, and the town’s scenic Fawn Lake was once the site of the Sweetwater Hotel, an idyllic retreat for Bostonians. Today it is open to the townspeople who come to canoe, kayak, fish, or just enjoy the view.
Conservation land includes Springs Brook, adjacent to the newly-refurbished Springs Brook Park, which features a popular summer spot for swimming in the spring-fed man-made pond, complete with a sandy beach, bathhouse, a large picnic area, and a sprinkler park.
Bedford is also part of the Minuteman Bikeway, a popular 12-mile paved bike path between Bedford and Cambridge that attracts runners, cyclists, walkers and cross-country skiers. Cycling enthusiasts can pedal all the way to Boston.
